Hi all readers! Are you looking for an explanation about “can a Muslim have a dog in his house?”? If your answer is “Yes”, congratulations! Now you are reading the right article. Why? Because that is what I will explain in this article. As Muslims, we must understand that. That's why I wrote this article. So, you have to read it to the end.
Specifically, there are three important things about “can a Muslim have a dog in his house?” which I will explain in this article. The three important things I mean are as follows:
Dogs in Islam
The first important thing about “can a Muslim have a dog in his house?” what I will explain now is "dogs in Islam" in general. I want you to understand that so you have a basic understanding of dogs before you read any more explanations in this article.
Dogs are one of Allah's creatures. There are many opinions about dogs. Some examples are that dogs are one type of animal that should not be eaten, that dog saliva is unclean, and so on.
Although there are several opinions about dogs, there is one type of dog that is glorified in Islam. The point is that in the Quran there are stories about dog obedience. The dog I mean is Ashabul Kahf's dog. Stories about it are very popular among Muslims.
In addition, although dogs are one of the animals that should not be eaten and their saliva is unclean, but we should not hurt dogs. As one of the creatures that has been created by Allah, dogs have the right to be treated well. Muslims who love dogs (do not torture dogs) will get the love of Allah and the inhabitants of the sky.
We can find this explanation in the three hadiths below:
Allah only loves His loving servants.
Merciful people will be loved by the Most Merciful God (Allah). Love all creatures on earth, then all creatures in the sky will love you.
Whoever loves even a sparrow that has been slaughtered, Allah will have mercy on him on the Day of Resurrection.
So, if we have understood the three hadiths above, then we can conclude that Islam loves dogs very much. That's why Islam requires Muslims to love him.
That's a brief explanation of "dogs in Islam". As Muslims, we must understand that.
Quran and Hadith About Dogs
The second important point about “can a Muslim have a dog in his house?” what I will explain now is the Quran and hadith about dogs. I want you to understand that so that you have a complete understanding of our discussion.
Quran About Dogs
As for the Quran about dogs I mean the following:
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So, eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah." Indeed, Allah is swift in account. (Al-Maidah [5]; 4).
And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror. (Al-Kahfi [18]; 18).
They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone." (Al-Kahfi [18]; 22).
And if We had willed, we could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So, his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So, relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought. (Al-A’raf [7]; 176).
Hadith About Dogs
As for the hadith about dogs I mean as follows:
From Ibn Umar radliyallahu anhuma, he said, "I have heard the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say, "Whoever keeps a dog, except hunting dogs and dogs for guarding livestock, then his reward is reduced by two Qirath every day." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim. In one of the narrations it is described: one Qirath.
From Abu Talhah radiyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "The angels will not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture."
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "The way to purify your vessels that have been licked by dogs is to wash them seven times and one of them with dust." This hadith was narrated by Muslim.
That's a brief explanation of the Quran and hadith about dogs. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Can a Muslim Have a Dog in His House?
The third important point about “can a Muslim have a dog in his house?” what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer.
If we understand some of the explanations above, especially in the hadith below:
From Ibn Umar radliyallahu anhuma, he said, "I have heard the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say, "Whoever keeps a dog, except hunting dogs and dogs for guarding livestock, then his reward is reduced by two Qirath every day." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim. In one of the narrations it is described: one Qirath.
So, we can conclude that a Muslim is allowed to have a dog in house if it is for an important purpose, such as guarding the house. But having a dog in the house is not allowed if it is without an important purpose. That's the answer.
