Fly Falls Into a Drink: What Does Islam Say?
Hi everyone! In this article, we will explore the Islamic perspective on what to do if a fly falls into a drink or food. Flies are common creatures that we often encounter in daily life. They may land on our bodies, food, or drinks, causing concerns about cleanliness and purity.
But what does Islam say about this situation? Does the food or drink become impure? Let's delve into this matter by referring to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Hadith About a Fly Falling Into a Drink
The following hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provides specific guidance:
From Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, 'If a fly falls into the drink of one of you, immerse it fully, then remove it. For indeed, in one of its wings there is disease, and in the other is its cure.' (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud)."
Lessons from the Hadith
The hadith above highlights several important points:
Permissibility to Kill Flies
If a fly falls into your food or drink, you may immerse it as instructed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Drink or Food Remains Pure
If the fly dies after being submerged, it does not render the drink or food impure. The Prophet's guidance to dip the fly demonstrates that even its carcass does not make the liquid unclean, especially if the liquid is hot. This is because carcasses without flowing blood are considered pure in Islamic law.

Scientific Miracles in Islam
The hadith reveals a profound scientific truth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated that one wing of the fly carries disease while the other carries the cure. Modern science has confirmed this through microscopic research, validating the wisdom in the Prophet's words.
Encouragement to Seek Treatment
Islam emphasizes the importance of seeking medical treatment for illnesses. The hadith teaches us to take action against diseases while trusting Allah for ultimate healing.
Flies Are Not Impure in Islam
Based on the hadith and the guidance provided, it is clear that a fly does not make food or drink impure. You may consume the food or drink by following the steps prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
This profound teaching is a reminder of the divine origin of the Prophet's knowledge. As Allah says in the Qur'an:
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ ٣ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيٞ يُوحَىٰ ٤
"Nor does he speak from [his own] desire. It is nothing except a revelation revealed." (An-Najm [53]: 3–4)
Conclusion
The hadith about a fly falling into a drink serves as a testament to the wisdom and scientific miracles found in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It provides clarity on matters of cleanliness, health, and faith, affirming that Islamic guidance is both practical and profound.
