Is It Haram to Have Cats? ~ Hi readers! Cats are tame and cute animals. Maybe these two things are the reasons for some people to maintain it. They are willing to pay a lot of money to have a cat they like. But, does Islam allow a Muslim to do that; have a cat? As Muslims, we must know that. That's why I wrote this article.

Before I further explain whether is it haram to have cats, I want to explain some general things that we can make as a basis for arguments to determine the answer. First, a Muslim must maintain the purity of the body. Second, a Muslim is strictly prohibited from hurting anyone and anything.

Now, another question that we must answer before we answer the above question is, are cats unclean animals? We can find the answer in the following hadith.

Hadith About Cats

The hadith about cats that I mean is as follows:

عَنْ أَبِيْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : فِيْ الْهِرَّةِ : إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ مِنَ الطَّوَافِيْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ . أَخْرَجَهُ الْأَرْبَعَةُ وَ إِبْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ

From Abu Qatadah radliyallahu anhu, he (Prophet Muhammad) said about cats; indeed, it is not unclean. That includes the animals that surround you. This hadith was narrated by four people (Abu Daud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'I, and Ibn Majah) and Ibn Khuzaimah.

If we have read the hadith above, of course we already know that cats are not unclean animals. For this reason, a Muslim is allowed to touch, hold and read cats.

The second question that we must also answer is, does someone own a cat or be kept at home feel pain or misery?

If we can prove with very valid data, that a cat will feel sick or miserable if someone have it keep it at home, then having a cat or keeping it is strictly prohibited. But if a cat feels comfortable and good if someone owns or is cared for, then having a cat is allowed.

The point we should pay attention to is kindness to cats. This kind of argument also applies to have other animals.

Readers all! That's a brief explanation of "Is It Haram to Have Cats?". Do you understand? If you have any questions, please ask!

I think that's all for this article. May be useful. Amen!

See you again in the next article!
