In Arabic, prayer (صَلَاةُ) is prayer. In Islamic law, prayers (صَلَاةُ) are sayings and movements that begin with Takbir Ihram and end with Salaam.
In Arabic, the meaning of Witr (الْوِتْرِ) is odd (1, 3, 5, 7, and so on) or not even (2, 4, 6, 8, and so on).
If we understand the literal meaning of the Witr prayer, we can conclude that the Witr prayer is a prayer performed with odd rakats, such as one rakat, three rakat, five rakat, seven rakat, and so on. So, Muslims cannot perform Witr prayer with even rakats, such as two rakats, four rakats, six rakats, eight rakats, and so on.
If we read some Islamic legal literature about Witr prayer, we will find an explanation that Witr prayer is one type of recommended prayer or sunnah prayer. Witr prayer is not obligatory for Muslims. The meaning is that they will be rewarded if they perform the Witr prayer, but they will not sin if they do not do that.

عَنْ جَابِرٍ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فِيْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ انْتَظَرُوْهُ مِنَ الْقَابِلَةِ فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ وَقَالَ ؛ إِنِّيْ خَشِيْتُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ عَلَيْكُمْ الْوِتْرُ . رَوَاهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانٍ
From Jabir bin Abdillah radliyallahu anhuma, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam performed tarawih prayer during the month of Ramadan. Then they waited for him the next night, but he did not come out (the house) and said, "Indeed I am worried that the Witr prayer will be obliged to you." The hadith is narrated by Ibn Hibban.

Hadith About Witr Prayer
The second important thing about "Witr prayer and how to pray Witr?" what I will explain now is hadith about Witr prayer. I want you to understand that so that you understand the evidence about the Witr prayer. So, you must understand some of the explanations in the following paragraphs.
Before I explain more about the hadith about Witr prayer, I want you to understand that there are many hadiths about the Witr prayer. I won't explain it all here. In this article, I will explain three hadiths about the Witr prayer.
The three hadiths about Witr prayer that I mean are as follows:
Hadith About Witr Prayer Times
The first hadith about Witr prayer that I will explain now is the hadith about the Witr prayer times. In the hadith below it is explained that the time for the Witr prayer is after the Isha prayer until before the dawn sadiq (second dawn) rises. Look at the hadith below:
عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ؛ إِذَا طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ فَقَدْ ذَهَبَ وَقْتُ كُلِّ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ وَالْوِتْرِ ، فَأَوْتِرُوْا قَبْلَ طُلُوْعِ الْفَجْرِ . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ
From Ibn Umar radliyallahu anhumaa, from the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, he said, "If dawn has arisen, then really the time for evening prayer and Witr prayer is gone. Pray Witr before dawn appears!" The hadith is narrated by at-Tirmidhi.

Hadith About the Virtue of Witr Prayer
The second hadith about Witr prayer that I will explain now is the hadith about the virtues of the Witr prayer. In the hadith below it is explained that the Witr prayer is a prayer that is liked by Allah. The point is that Allah is very pleased when Muslims perform the Witr prayer. عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ ؛ قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؛ أَوْتِرُوْا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّ اللهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوِتْرَ . رَوَاهُ الْخَمْسَةٌ
From Ali radliyallahu anhu, he said, "Allah's Messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Pray Witr, O Ahul Quran! Indeed, Allah is one and likes the Witr prayer." The hadith is narrated by five people (Ahmad, Abu Daud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah).

Hadith About Witr Prayer Rakats
The third hadith about Witr prayer that I will explain now is the hadith about the Witr prayer rakats. In the hadith below it is explained that the Witr prayer must be performed with odd rakats (1, 3, 5, and so on). Look at the hadith below:
عَنْ أَبِيْ أَيُّوْبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ؛ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ ، مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوْتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ ، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوْتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ ، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوْتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ . رَوَاهُ الْأَرْبَعَةُ إِلَّا التِّرْمِذِيُّ
From Abu Ayyub al-Ansari radliyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Witr prayer is the obligation of every Muslim. Whoever likes the five rakats, then he will do it. Whoever likes three rakats, then let him do. Anyone who likes one rakat, then let him do." The hadith is narrated by four people except at-Tirmidhi (Abu Daud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah).

How to Pray Witr?
The third important thing about "witr prayer and how to pray Witr?" what I will explain now is "how to pray Witr?". I want you to understand that because it is one of the important material about the Witr prayer that must be understood properly.
One important thing I want to say is that the Witr prayer is performed like a regular sunnah prayer. If we want to perform the Witr prayer with three rakats, we have to do it with two rakats first. After that we do the Witr prayer with one rakat. If we want to perform Witr prayer with five rakats, we have to do it with two rakats first. After that we perform the Witr prayer again with two rakats. After that we do the Witr prayer with one rakat. If we want to do the Witr prayer with one rakat, then we can do that.
In general, if we read some Islamic legal literature on Witr prayer, we will find an explanation that there are three steps that must be taken to perform Witr prayer:
- Purifying the body from minor and major hadas.
- Say niyyah for the Witr prayer.
The intention of the Witir prayer is as follows;
أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةً مِنَ الْوِتْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى
I intend to do part of Witr, the sunnah prayer, two rakats, by facing the qiblah, because of Allah Taala.
أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةً الْوِتْرِ رَكْعَةً مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى
I intend to do the sunnah Witr prayer, one rakat, by facing the qiblah, because of Allah Taala.
