What Is Bismillah?

The first thing about Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) that I will explain now is "What is Bismillah?". I want you to understand it all first before you read more explanations in this article because it is all the most basic things about Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الر َّحِيْمِ) which you must understand first before you understand other things about the sentence.

The sentence Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) is one of the Islamic Arabic sentences. In full, there are five words in the sentence:

  1. Bi (بِ). The meaning is "With".
  2. Ismi (اسْمِ). The meaning is "Name".
  3. Allahi (اللهِ). The meaning is "Allah".
  4. Ar-Rahmani (الرَّحْمَانِ). The meaning is "God who is most merciful in the world".
  5. Ar-Rahimi (الرَّحِيْمِ). The meaning is "God who is merciful in this world and the hereafter".

Those are the words in Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) and their respective meanings. As Muslims, we must understand all of this because it will help us understand other discussion topics regarding this sentence.

Benefits of Bismillah

The second thing I will explain now is the benefits of Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْم ِ). You have to understand all of that now because these are all important things about Bismillah that must be understood well.

Before I explain the benefits of Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ), I will quote one hadith that specifically relates to the topic. One hadith that I mean is as follows:

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : كُلُّ أَمْرٍ ذِيْ بَالٍ لَا يُبْدَأُ بِاسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ فَهُوَ أَبْتَرُ

The Prophet (Muhammad) SAW said, “All good activities that do not start by saying “Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ)” will be cut off from blessings.

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam explained that everything that does not start with Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ), then it will all be cut off from blessings. What this means is that everything we do will not have much benefit, especially spiritual goodness.

When Should You Say Bismillah?

The third thing I will explain now is the answer to one common question about Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْم ِ): when should you say Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ)? You have to understand that now because in some cases we will not get the benefits of Bismillah even though we have said that sentence before doing something.

Of course, you already know that Islam strictly prohibits Muslims from doing things that violate Islamic rules, such as hurting other people, swearing, slandering, and so on. These are all bad things that they should be aware of. If they did that, they would be sinning. If they say Bismillah before doing these things, then they will not get the benefits of Bismillah because Bismillah cannot change bad things into good things. Bad things are bad things. Good things are good things.

So, when should you say Bismillah? The answer to this question is as follows:

  1. When you will do good things.
  2. When you are going to do things that are still doubtful about their badness. So, you are sure it is bad or not. In anticipation, you say Bismillah.

General Meaning of Bismillah

The fourth thing I will explain now is the general meaning of Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) or Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ). You have to understand that because the meaning of the sentence cannot only be understood from the meaning of it word for word.

Literally, if you understand the meaning word for word of the sentence Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) as I have explained in several previous paragraphs, you can conclude that the meaning of the sentence is "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful God who is merciful in the world, and God who is merciful in this world and the hereafter." That's right. Very true in fact. But actually, the meaning of the sentence is very flexible.

I say the meaning of Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) is very flexible because it relates to something we are going to do. For example, if we say the sentence before performing Hajj, the meaning of the sentence is slightly different if we say it before visiting a relative or someone else's house.

If we say Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) before performing Hajj, then the meaning of the sentence is "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful God in the world, and the God Who is Merciful in the World and In the afterlife, I intend to perform Hajj.” We say these sentences in the hope that Allah will help us, protect us during Hajj and after Hajj, and make our Hajj a Hajj Mabrur.

If we say Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَانِ الرَّحِيْمِ) before going to your (or someone else's) house, then the meaning of the sentence is "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful God in the world, and the God Who is Most Merciful i in this world and the hereafter, I intend visit your house for good."
