Because this is exactly what I will explain here. As Muslims, it is important for us to understand this concept, which is why I wrote this article. Be sure to read it until the end!
Specifically, there are five key points regarding "What to do if you can't do ghusl?" that I will explain in this article. These five important points are as follows:
Why Is Ghusl Important for Muslims?
The first important thing we need to address about "What to do if you can't do ghusl?" is "Why is ghusl important for Muslims?". Understanding this is essential before we delve into the details of the discussion.
How to Do Ghusl Without Showering?
In general, there are three types of ghusl in Islam:
Regular Ghusl
This type of ghusl is done for general cleanliness.
Sunnah Ghusl (Recommended Ghusl)
Sunnah ghusl is recommended, like the ghusl before Friday prayers for Muslim men.
Compulsory Ghusl
This is the most important type of ghusl we are focusing on in this article. Compulsory ghusl (or ghusl Janabah) is performed to cleanse from major hadas (impurities), which prevents Muslims from performing certain acts, like praying, touching the Quran, and doing Tawaf.
In our current discussion, we focus specifically on compulsory ghusl or ghusl Janabah.
When Is Ghusl Compulsory for Muslims?
The second important point is "When is ghusl compulsory for Muslims?". Knowing this helps you gain a complete understanding of the topic.
Compulsory ghusl is required to cleanse from major hadas. This applies when a Muslim experiences certain conditions that cause major hadas, including:
- Sexual Intercourse.
- Releasing Sperm (such as during a wet dream or masturbation).
For men, sexual intercourse causes major hadas, as stated in the following hadith:
From Abu Hurairah (RA), he said: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, 'If someone sits between her four branches, then he exerts himself, then ghusl becomes obligatory, even if he does not release sperm.'" (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
For women, releasing sperm also causes major hadas, which can occur through wet dreams, as narrated in the following hadith:
From Anas (RA), he said: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, 'If a woman experiences what a man sees in his dream, then she must take ghusl.'" (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
In addition to sexual activity, menstruation and postpartum bleeding (nifas) are also causes for women to perform ghusl.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "When menstruation comes, do not pray. When it ends, wash off the blood and pray."
What to Do If You Can't Do Ghusl?
The third important point is "What to do if you can't do ghusl?". There are specific situations where Muslims might not be able to perform ghusl due to factors such as:
- Very cold weather
- Illness
- Lack of water for ghusl
In such cases, Muslims are required to perform Tayammum.
What Is Tayammum in Islam?
The fourth point is "What is Tayammum in Islam?". Tayammum is the act of purifying oneself using clean dust or sand, especially when water is unavailable. This is a solution for both minor and major hadas when water cannot be used.
From Jabir (RA), the Prophet (SAW) said, "I have been given five things which no prophet before me was given...the earth has been made a mosque for me and a means of purification."
How to Perform Tayammum: A Step-by-Step Guide
The fifth important question about what to do if you can't perform ghusl is: How do you perform Tayammum? I want you to fully understand the process, so you know exactly what to do when Tayammum becomes necessary.
In general, the explanation of how to perform Tayammum can be found in the following hadith:
From 'Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent me on a mission. I then became junub (in a state of major impurity) and could not find water. I rolled on the earth like an animal. Then I went to the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and informed him of this. He then said: Indeed, it is enough for you to do this with both your hands." Then, he clapped his hands on the ground once, rubbed his left hand over his right, and wiped his face and the outside of his palms." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
In the narration of al-Bukhari, it is explained: And he clapped his hands on the earth and then blew (the dust) into them. Then, he wiped his face and palms with his hands.
Based on these two hadiths and additional explanations, we can conclude that there are three essential steps that a Muslim must follow when performing Tayammum:
- Obtain clean earth or sand: This is the first step in the Tayammum process.
- Rub your two palms on the earth: After rubbing both palms on the earth, wipe your face and then wipe your hands up to the elbows.
- Recite the Tayammum intention prayer: The prayer for Tayammum is as follows:
I intend to perform Tayammum to permit the prayer, as an obligation, for the sake of Allah the Exalted.
This is a brief explanation of how to perform Tayammum. As Muslims, it is important to understand the proper procedure.
This explanation also addresses what to do if you can't perform ghusl. Do you understand? If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
