Tahajjud Prayer Hadith
The third important thing about "is it a must to sleep before tahajjud prayer?" what I will explain now is Tahajjud prayer hadith. I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important things in this discussion that must be well understood. There are many hadiths on Tahajjud prayer. Of course, I'm not going to explain all of that now. In this article, I will only quote four hadiths.
The four hadiths about Tahajjud prayer are as follows:
It was narrated from Abu Umamah al-Bahili radliyallahu anhu, from the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, he said, "Do Qiyamyul Lail (by doing Tahajud prayer) continuously, because it is the habit of the pious people before you. Qiyamul Lail (by doing Tahajjud prayer) is your worship to your Lord, removing various faults and preventing sins." This hadith was narrated by al-Hakim.
The above hadith explains some of the virtues of Tahajjud prayer: pious people before Prophet Muhammad was sent as a Prophet and Messenger of Allah performed Tahajjud prayer, Tahajjud prayer is one of the sunnah worship, Tahajjud prayer can remove sins, and Tahajjud prayer can prevent someone from committing sins.
Abdullah bin Umar radliyallahu anhuma said, "Someone asked Allah's Messenger (Prophet Muhammad), "How to do the night prayer?" He said, "Two rakats, two rakats. If you are worried that you will not be able to perform the Fajr prayer (because of that), then do the Witr prayer with one rakat."
The above hadith explains how to doing Tahajjud prayer. Tahajjud prayer is performed every two rakats. The point is that we have to do Salaam after we have performed two rakats for Tahajjud prayer. Two rakats is the minimum rakats for Tahajjud prayer.
From Ibn Abbas radliyallahu anhuma, he said, "The prayer of Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam was thirteen rakats (meaning he prayed at night)."
The above hadith describes the number of rakats that Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did at night, that he performed thirteen rakats. We can assume that he performed twelve rakats for Tahajjud prayer and one rakat for Witr prayer.
Allah's Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "The best of people are servants of Allah, if he prays at night, after that he does not sleep at night except for a short time."
The above hadith explains the recommendation to doing Tahajjud prayer. A Muslim who doing Tahajjud prayer is a good Muslim because he worships his Lord when many people are sleeping.
That is a brief explanation of Tahajjud prayer hadith. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Is It a Must to Sleep Before Tahajjud Prayer?
The fourth important thing about "is it a must to sleep before tahajjud prayer?" what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. So, I really hope you guys read the explanation below very well.
Before I give you the answer to the question (is it a must to sleep before tahajjud prayer?), I will quote two hadiths that are specifically related to this discussion. The two hadiths I am referring to are as follows:
From al-Aswad, he said, “I asked Aisha "How is the night prayer of the Prophet?" She replied, "He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath, he would take it; otherwise he would perform wudu and then go out (for the prayer)."
The above hadith explains that Prophet Muhammad slept at the beginning of the night and he woke up at the end of the night to pray at night. Tahajjud prayer is one of the prayers at night.
The above hadith is one of the arguments that explain that sleeping before Tahajjud prayer is an obligation.
Salman said to Abu Darda' radliyallahu anhuma, "Go to sleep". At the end of the night he said, "Get up." The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Salman is right."
The hadith above explains that sleeping before Tahajjud prayer is obligatory. The Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam agreed with Salman's words to Abu Darda' as described in the hadith.
Now, if you ask me, "is it a must to sleep before tahajjud prayer?", the answer is "Yes. Sleeeping before tahajjud prayer is a must."
